Dozens of folks from as far as the Midwest competed in an ancient Irish sport in Virginia Beach Saturday – in very un-Irish weather.
When men play, it’s called hurling. When women play, it’s camogie. The game is a synthesis of lacrosse, field hockey, rugby and baseball. Players with paddles run up and down a pitch larger than a soccer field, juggling and whacking a ball the size of a baseball and aiming to get it into the net or over it.
Hampton Roads’ hurling club hosted the Coastal Virginia Cup this weekend, bringing in teams from Maryland, Ohio and Washington, D.C.
